Coastal, rainfall/runoff and river models

The Earth Science Centre (ESC) consists of four unique models:

  • coastal model
  • wave tank
  • river model
  • rainfall/ runoff model

It also contains an automatic weather station, smaller scale simulations, a suite of computers, and an interactive whiteboard.

Sessions can be tailored to meet your needs.

  • Half or full day
  • KS1 - A level
  • Revision or introduction to a topic
  • Follow up materials provided
  • Groups from 5 - 30 pupils
  • Choose the area of your course you wish to focus on

Prices are competitive, (from £4 per pupil for a primary group, half day)

A typical session involves group work, hands on work with the models, data measurement, recording and analysis, using the interactive whiteboard, making a cost-benefit analysis and investigating pupils’ own values.

Pupils leave the Centre with a grasp of concepts that can be difficult in the school classroom. Some examples of questions, which the Centre can help pupils to answer:

  • How does rain get to a river? KS2
  • How do people sometime make floods worse? KS3
  • Is it worth defending the coast? GCSE
  • What is dynamic equilibrium? A2

Research has shown that sessions in the ESC enable:

  • a grasp of how physical process and landforms are linked
  • more motivation to study rivers and coasts (including landforms, processes and the human impact)
  • ‘fixing’ case studies in the memory by relating them to the models
  • teachers to develop strategies, through their use of the models

As well as catering for pupils the Centre also offers INSET and CPD opportunities for primary and secondary teachers
